Southstoke is a picturesque and highly desirable village located just 2–3 miles south of Bath, offering an idyllic rural lifestyle within minutes of the city. With a population of around 419 residents, Southstoke has a strong community feel and a peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere. The village is known for its historic charm, including St James’s Church, a centuries-old landmark, and a collection of attractive period homes. Southstoke also benefits from its much-loved community pub, The Packhorse, which was famously saved and restored through local fundraising and now serves as a vibrant social hub.
Despite its tranquil setting, Southstoke offers excellent access to Bath’s amenities, schools, and transport links. The village sits above the River Avon and the route of the former Somerset Coal Canal, with Bath city centre easily reached by car, bus, walking routes, or nearby cycle paths.
With its blend of rural beauty, heritage character, and close proximity to Bath, Southstoke is one of the area’s most sought-after village locations.

Direct Buses:
Southstoke enjoys convenient direct bus connections into Bath, making it easy for residents to travel without relying on a car. Buses run frequently throughout the day, with services operating every 30 minutes between Bath and Southstoke and journey times averaging around 7 minutes. All services run direct with no transfers required, and the earliest buses start before 5am, with late services running until just before midnight.
Walking & Cycling Routes:
Southstoke is surrounded by some of the most picturesque countryside in the Bath area, making it a superb location for walking and cycling. A number of well-loved routes start from or pass through the village, including the South Stoke Circular, a scenic 3.5-mile loop through rolling hills, farmland, and the historic route of the Somersetshire Coal Canal. Longer walks connect Southstoke with nearby villages such as Monkton Combe and Combe Hay, offering woodland paths, valley views, and access to landmarks like the Dundas Aqueduct.
Cyclists benefit from a wide choice of mapped routes around the village, with options ranging from gentle countryside loops to more challenging rides taking in Midford, Combe Down, and the surrounding Cotswold landscapes. The area’s quiet lanes and scenic trails make it ideal for both leisure riders and more experienced cyclists.
